ChangePoint is committed to the overall health of our clients, and as a result, all of our treatment programs include a Tobacco Cessation component. For many years conventional wisdom had it that "you have to leave people something" so people in recovery from substance abuse were not encouraged to stop smoking as well. Current research supports recognition of the addicting power of nicotine, as well as smoking's enormous negative health effects.
Over 425,000 deaths annually in the United States are attributable to the use of tobacco. Of this number, approximately half are individuals with chemical dependency or mental health diagnoses. This is the greatest public health crisis of our time, and the most significant health disparity in the United States. In a society where under 20% of all adults are tobacco users, in the chemically dependent/mentally ill communities, the number is somewhere between 70-90%.
Since 2005 ChangePoint has integrated Tobacco Cessation information and referral into all of our treatment programs. At least once every 90 days, every one of our treatment groups experiences an educational session about tobacco use and cessation, with the goal of having our clients set a quit date during their time spent at our agency. This is a rather lofty goal, and we consider it to be a worthy one in the interest of improving the health of our clients, and in the interest of saving lives.
